Rib Day – Cane & Grain

We’ve been big fans of Cane and Grain for a while and we’ve done previous reviews on their lunch menu and their 1st Floor Bar, but we just had to post about the legend that we have coined ‘Rib Day’.

It was basically as simple as it sounds. We starved ourselves all day so that we’d be able to gorge ourselves on the best ribs in Manchester. If you’re coming to Cane & Grain for the first time you’ve got to try the ribs, they do have a selection of burgers/sandwiches but these ribs are too good to be missing out on. There’s a selection of different pork and beef ribs with your choice of sauce to drizzle over the top. Plus there’s a brilliant selection of sides to enhance your meal.

We opted for Beef Short Ribs all round. I went for the Cane Sauce, Appleton Estate Rum reduced down into a sweet & sticky sauce, but every option on the menu makes a great accompaniment for your ribs.

Cane & Grain have mastered the technique of cooking ribs. Smoked to perfection on the outside yet tender and falling off the bone on the inside; each bite is amazing. The best part comes when you reach the middle of the ribs and you get to the really really tender meat. Served with a side of fries there’s more than enough food (even if you have starved yourself all day!) And yet I still felt the need to order some buffalo wings to share which were a great companion for the ribs. I was, embarrassingly, defeated by the sheer amount of ribs, fries and wings! On the plus side they have boxes for you to take food home in and it made my lunch a lot more exciting the following day.

For such legendary greatness you will have to pay the price; £22 for the Short Ribs (admittedly the most expensive thing on the menu) but it’ll be worth it. These aren’t the sort of ribs you eat every week and it makes for a special occasion when you tuck into them, so we didn’t mind spending a little extra!

In short, these are the best ribs we’ve ever had.

The Highs:
The best ribs we’ve ever had. Plus the staff are always great, they’ve got a nice house beer and they play great music.

The Lows:
The ribs are on the expensive side but you won’t be ordering a starter and desert after these, so in the long run it’ll be the same price as a normal meal.

Back Again?
After the greatness of the lunch menu we had to go back and try the real deal, and boy was it the real deal! Rib Day shall return!
