Sunday Lunch in Didsbury – Volta

Burton Road in Didsbury is a little hive of great looking bars and restaurant and a craving for a traditional Sunday Roast a few weeks ago took us there. A quick Google search will show that Volta is one of ‘the’ places to get a roast in Manchester and the surrounding areas. We soon found out why.

It’s a simple, welcoming decor upon arrival. A small, cosy space with wooden tables and benches opposite the great selection of real ales they serve at the bar. After ordering a recommended ale and a Kopparberg, nicely served with fresh lime and strawberries in a glass, we waited excitedly for our roasts; beef and pork respectively. You’ll get an idea of how good the roasts are by just watching other people’s food go past. You’ll be dying to tuck into some home comforts by the time yours arrives.

It’s a very attractive plate of food, piled high just like a roast dinner should be. Everything was cooked pretty much to perfection, the meat was juicy, and there was plenty of it, and the roast potatoes were soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. The only thing the meal could have done with was a bit of gravy for the Yorkshire Pudding, which was a really impressive size and texture but just needed a little bit of gravy to soften it.

Volta are mainly known for their sharing platter roast dinners that offer up a bit of an alternative to the usual Sunday meal; Roast Beef, Pork and Poussin with all the trimmings served on one big sharing plate for two of you (or four of you with the upgrade) to sink your teeth into. I could be mistaken but the platter did seem to come with gravy from what we saw when spying on other peoples meals but no doubt the platter looks hugely impressive and it’s something we’ll be going back to try for ourselves.

We also got ourselves a Creme Brulee, you know, because why the hell not?

If the rest of Didsbury’s food and drink scene is like Volta it’s a place we’re going to have to dedicate some time to exploring!

The Highs:
A nice little place to spend a lazy afternoon with a few different ales and a hearty roast.

The Lows:
I’d have loved some gravy with the meal but bar that, it was a pretty spot on roast dinner.

Back again?
How else are we going to get one of those sharing platters?
